Epidemic: Teens Addicted to Porn

Pornography is no respecter of persons.  The viewing of pornography, nudity, or sexual acts is highly addictive to the brain.  It does not matter if you are male, female, transgender [Read the Rise of Transhumanism blog], young or old.  It will begin to consume you, as you consume it little by little, and then more and more.  It will take your time, attention, money, emotions, creativity, as well as relationships (both present and future) along with it until it destroys or even kills you.

Teenagers are no exception to becoming caught in its web. With today’s technology, our children are being exposed to pornography at rates not clear, causing future damage which is not yet known.  It is not a matter of if your child, let alone your teenager, is exposed to porn.  It’s just a matter of when.

What are parents to do if they believe their child or teenager is addicted to porn? [Read Help, I Think my Child is Addicted to Porn]  It was once thought that only boys or men struggled with porn, but this is no longer true.  Thanks to the explosion of technology, there is an exploding number of female sex addicts [Read the Female Sex Addict].

Teenagers are at a very vulnerable age in their mental and emotional development.  They are looking for validation, identity, and love.  Not only teens but also adults mistakenly fall into the trap of believing that “sex is love.”  Why is it that sex and romance are attached to Valentine’s Day and love?  Sex has nothing to do with love.  Movies like Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker are intentionally released on or around this observed day to mislead people.

One of the biggest lies in our culture is that sex is love.  Because of this, teens can easily fall into sexually acting out with others to find love.  Porn sites, media, romance novels and marketing intentionally target teens and their insecurities, selling them love, fun and happiness if you use their products.  They make you believe you will find love and acceptance by using their social media site.

The accessibility and means are limitless from movies, TV, magazines, texting, sexting, social media, smart phones, WiFi, apps, laptops, pads and pods, as well as desktops at school, home, the public library, or a friend’s house.  It is no wonder teens are struggling with porn.  Teens are also intentionally targeted by the porn industry with innocent key word searches, such as “love, relationships, or dating” that mislead them to questionable sites or porn.  Not only accessibility is greater than ever at a younger age but also acceptability from other teens and parents.  Most of all, we live in a culture that pushes and encourages you to allow your feelings to lead you.  “If it feels good, do it!”

If you think porn is the same as when you were a teen, you are mistaken.  Today’s porn encourages the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of women.  It is degrading and makes the act of sex into a performance and conquest.  It has nothing to do with intimacy.  The media and the porn industry are dishonest and only seek out our teenagers to get them addicted for the sake of profit.  All pornography in the end also supports sex and human trafficking [Visit our Sex Trafficking Resources]

Lies, lies and more lies.  Some time ago, I wrote two open letters to teen boys and teen girls.  [Read 10 Lies Young Men Face in a Porn Culture and 10 Lies Young Women Face in a Porn Culture.]  All of humanity is created for intimacy and connection.  Sex and porn have nothing to do with intimacy and will leave you feeling empty.

If you are a teen who has been unable to stop viewing porn, here are some things to consider.

  • Know you are not alone
  • Know this addiction is difficult to overcome by yourself
  • There is hope
  • The addiction has power as long as it is kept secret
  • Tell a loving parent or a trusted adult about your struggle
  • Ask for help from a professional specializing in pornography addiction

If you are a parent who believes or knows your teen is struggling with pornography, romance literature, or fetishes consider the following.

  • Remove and/or limit electronic devices
  • Apply restrictive software on all devices
  • Listen to them, and do not shame them
  • Educate yourself about pornography addiction
  • Get them to a professional who specializes in pornography addiction
  • Pray for wisdom

Finally, take action.

  1. Call or schedule a free assessment today.
  2. Take the online Teen Porn Addict Test
  3. Invest in the future of your teenager with a 3 or 5 day intensive
